The bridge on Dundas St. over the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railway tracks and Grindstone Creek near Mill St. will be demolished and reconstructed across the 2025 and 2026 construction seasons. From spring through fall of 2025, demolition and rebuilding of the south side of the bridge will take place. During this phase, only one-way only traffic will flow through the bridge, traveling east towards Burlington. West bound traffic will be detoured through Avonsyde Blvd. to Parkside Dr. and back to Dundas St. through Hamilton St. Phase two will begin in the spring of 2026, wherein two-way traffic will flow while the north side of the bridge is reconstructed. Pedestrian traffic and emergency vehicles will be able to traverse the bridge at all times.
The City will host a public information session to share the final design highlight, construction timelines, phasing and traffic management and detour plans prior to the start of construction. The info session is planned for Wednesday, March 5, 2025 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at the Flamborough Municipal Centre, Seniors Centre, inside the Waterdown Library building at 163 Dundas St. E. All are welcome, registration in advance is encouraged. Residents can also attend the session virtually. Click here to register for the event or the VIRTUAL presentation.
The demolition and reconstruction of the bridge is only part of the scope of work. In addition, road and sidewalk reconstruction, municipal infrastructure upgrades and realignment (300mm watermain upgrade and realignment, 300mm sanitary sewer upgrade and realignment and 525mm sanitary forcemain realignment) are also included.
The construction is estimated to be two years and Dundas St E will be open during the bridge replacement as the bridge replacement will be undertaken in a two-phased construction. Transit, vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be maintained throughout construction.
In Phase 1 starting in spring 2025, the north side lane will be open to traffic in the eastbound direction only (to Burlington); the sidewalk on the north side will be open to pedestrian traffic and construction will be on the south side. Phase 2 will start in spring 2026 with two lanes open, one lane in each bound direction and the sidewalk on the south side will be open to pedestrian traffic and construction on the north side of the bridge. A temporary pedestrian crossing signal will be installed at Reynold Street and Dundas Street E during construction, to manage pedestrian traffic during the bridge construction. If you require wheelchair access or if you have a medical condition that may require special access at any point during construction, please advise the Construction Section at 905-546-4313 as soon as possible.
The speed limit at the construction site will be reduced for the duration of construction and there will be occasional short-term road closures up to several days at each time during reconnection of municipal utilities and bridge girder installation.
A detour route will be available from the start of the project and throughout construction. During Phase 1 of construction, one eastbound lane will remain open only. The westbound traffic will be detoured; the detour route will commence from Dundas Street E, through Avonsyde Boulevard, to Parkside Drive, to Hamilton Street, and back to Dundas Street E. Two new temporary signals will be installed on the detour road at Parkside and Robson intersection and Parkside and Boulding Avenue intersection respectively to ease the detour traffic flow.
Emergency and business access will be maintained during each phase of construction and driveways of private properties impacted due to road works will be regraded to match the new roadway by the City. All work is expected to be completed and fully opened to traffic by mid-December 2026.
