Traffic calming, road repairs, and infrastructure upgrades slated for 2023 and beyond

Here’s a simple truth, Waterdown is the fastest growing community in Hamilton.

Investment in our area is starting to catch up to the rate of growth. Our community needs and deserves equity when it comes to important capital projects, such as a new community centre, the planned police/fire compound, and a new public school. Logically, it takes years to move from dream to seeing these projects come to fruition.

The process for capital projects is complex. It involves a decision to move forward, the acquisition of suitable land/site, public consultation related to design, and finally the actual construction. Without losing focus on the long-term, I do want to highlight several near-term enhancements and investments coming soon, which will begin to address some of the issues we face in Ward 15.

There is more than $500,000 in road work, traffic calming measures, and public infrastructure investment coming to Waterdown in 2023. Currently, the area of Hamilton St. S. to Silver Ct. is receiving a complete resurface and regrade, along with sidewalk repairs. Further, 24 speed bumps will be installed on our streets, starting on Hollybush and reaching all the way to Avonsyde. Residents have long wanted to see speed reduction measures in place on Hollybush, Niska, Boulding, and Spring Creek — and those tools are coming soon. New pedestrian crossovers and crosswalk upgrades are planned for several areas as well.

Furthermore, major upgrades to Rockcliffe Park are underway. Located at the corner of Riley St. and Chudleigh St., enhancements to the park include the replacement and upgrading of playground equipment, along with the creation of a new accessible pathway.

Looking ahead to 2024, more than $3.5 million is earmarked for major improvements to Dundas St., specifically in the area from Mill St. to First St., for a bridge replacement and road reconstruction. Water and sewage infrastructure upgrades are also on tap. Past First St. through Avonsyde Blvd., Dundas will also receive a major rehabilitation and a multi-use path installation. Included in mid-term planning are more bike lanes and multi-use trails around Waterdown.

The upgrades mentioned are a step in the right direction in balancing the ledger for Ward 15 rate payers. That said, a focus on longer-term capital projects continues to be a priority for me at City Hall.
